A Poetic Adaptation of Numbers 27:1-11

Presented by The New Hope Baptist Church Drama Queens

1

We are women.

We are the daughters of Zelophedad.

We are women.

Wives and mothers, aunties and grandmothers.

We are women.

Sisters, godmothers and friends.

We are women.

Deacons, doctors, dancers, and domestics.

We are women.

Artists, administrators, accountants, and authors.

We are women.

Scholars, singers, social workers and soldiers.

We are women.

Caregivers, chefs, CEO’s, and change-makers.

We are women.

Preachers, professors, police officers and pastors.

We are women.

2.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

Kindred and Clans

From the shores of Ghana to the bayous of Louisiana.

Tribes and Peoples

From Barbados and Belize to Perth Amboy and Plainfield.

Folks and Families

From Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, Queens

Natives of Nigeria, New Jersey, North Carolina, and New Brunswick.

Women Placed.

Women Displaced.

Women Rooted.

Women Connected.

3.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

Call us by our names.

Harriet, Sojourner, Shirley, Zora, and Fannie.

Call us by our names.

Michelle, Oprah, Rosa, Althea, and Serena.

Call us by our names.

Jarena, Mary, Bessie, Biddy and Beyonce

Call us by our names.

Maxine, Anna Julia, Angela, Bernice and Nana Yaa.

Call us by our names.

Nina, Audre, Deborah, Patrice, and Dolores.

Call us by our names.

4.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

We showed up and we stood.

We worked, prayed and sang.

We marched, voted and preached.

We taught, nurtured and loved.

We wept, laughed and moaned.

We created, wrote and dreamed.

We envisioned.

We united.

We stood.

We voiced.

We claimed.

5.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

We showed up and we stood.

Voices raised, we demanded our land.

opportunity

freedom

healthcare

end to police brutality

and equal pay.

We demanded voting rights

a seat at the table

a place in the boardroom

adequate education

equity and justice.

We demanded to keep our families together

to keep our communities safe

to keep our churches thriving

to be heard

to be seen

and to be a treated as person of dignity, not only a body for consumption.

6.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

We showed up and we stood.

Voices raised, we demanded our land.

We raised the question, “Why should we be overlooked because we are women?”

Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons?

Why should we die of treatable diseases?

Why should we drink tainted water?

Why should we suffer?

Why should our bodies be policed and mishandled?

Why should our daughters be oppressed?

Why should we shrink?

Why should we work twice as hard for half as much?

7.

We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

We showed up and we stood.

Voices raised, we demanded our land.

We raised the question, “Why should we be overlooked because we are women?”

And God said, “What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

“What they are saying is right!”

God has spoken, “What they are saying is right!”

8.

 We are women.

Women of good stock.

And we have names.

We showed up and we stood.

Voices raised, we demanded our land.

We raised the question, “Why should we be overlooked because we are women?”

And God said, “What they are saying is right!”

Give them their land.

These women stood, give them opportunity

These women stood, give them policies that help them thrive.

These women stood, give them equal pay for equal work.

These women stood, give them access according to their abilities.

These women stood, give them what is rightfully theirs.

These women stood, give them justice

These women stood, give them freedom.

These women stood, give them all that God promised they would have.

We are standing, give us all that God promised WE would have.
